Composition of the medicinal product
The active substance of the drug is indomethacin, a derivative of indoleacetic acid. As auxiliary components are used:
- polyethylene oxide;
- dimethyl sulfoxide;
- thermostable triethanolamine;
- methyl parahydroxybenzoate;
- purified water.
The drug is available in metal tubes of 30 or 40 grams, the concentration of the active substance is 10%. The cost of ointments containing indomethacin ranges from 50-100 rubles.
Features of pharmacological action
Indomethacin has a non-selective inhibitory effect on type 1 and 2 cyclooxygenases. Due to this effect, the reactions of the arachidonic cascade are blocked in the focus of the pathology, the formation of prostaglandins, which cause pain, increase in temperature and increase tissue permeability, is reduced.
The range of action of indomethacin includes anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and some antiplatelet. The active substance suppresses the phases of exudation and proliferation in the inflammatory process. The pain syndrome is corrected, swelling goes away.
The drug is used as a local remedy to eliminate the pain of rheumatic and non-rheumatic etiology. The use of ointment reduces the severity of pain in the joints, both in motion and in a calm state, eliminates stiffness of joints in the morning. Indomethacin helps to return the normal range of motion in the joints and is used as an anti-inflammatory agent after injuries or surgery.
Range of indications for the appointment of ointment with indomethacin

It shows its effectiveness in the therapeutic correction of degenerative-dystrophic and inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system, including gout, psoriatic and rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, radiculitis, osteochondrosis, lumbago, sciatica, bursitis, inflammation of the tendons and ligaments.
The exception is coxarthrosis of the hip joint and degenerative changes in the intervertebral joints.

Special instructions for the use of indomethacin ointment
This local drug is used with caution for the treatment of pathologies in elderly patients, in the case of a history of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, and symptoms of dyspepsia during therapy. The use of the drug immediately after surgery is limited, with epilepsy and parkinsonism.
If the patient had a history of hypersensitivity to medicines from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, then indomethacin ointment is used in case of emergency.
During the course of therapy, it is mandatory to monitor the functionality of the kidneys and liver, and the parameters of the general blood test. The drug is not recommended to be used simultaneously with other drugs from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
You need to be aware: during the period of use of indomethacin ointment, it is necessary to refrain from forms of activity that are associated with the need for a high speed of psychomotor reactions. The drug may decrease attention span.
Before using an external agent, you should carefully read the contraindications and special instructions to minimize the manifestation of negative reactions.
Features of application and dosage
Indomethacin ointment is rubbed with a thin layer into the skin of pathological areas up to 3 times a day. The amount of the used product should not be more than 15 centimeters of the external drug per day for adult patients and 7,5 centimeters for children over fourteen years of age.
Even “neglected” joint problems can be cured at home! Just remember to smear it once a day.
Rubbing the ointment helps relieve soreness and correct other manifestations of the inflammatory reaction. Puffiness is gradually eliminated, the usual range of movements returns. Regular use of the drug allows you to achieve positive dynamics in the treatment of both degenerative-dystrophic and inflammatory pathologies.
Possible adverse reactions
The use of indomethacin ointment can provoke hyperemia, rashes, itching at the sites of application of the drug. It is recommended that before starting regular use of the drug, conduct a sensitivity test on a small area of the skin. If redness appears, and the place of application begins to itch, then it must be washed with distilled water or saline, and the indomethacin ointment in this clinical case should be prohibited.
What you need to know about drug interactions
The nature of the drug interactions of indomethacin and other drugs is shown in the table below.
|Saluretics||Indomethacin reduces effectiveness|
|Indirect anticoagulants||Enhances efficiency|
|Diflunisal||Concomitant use can cause gastrointestinal bleeding|
|Methotrexate||Increased toxicity of methotrexate due to a decrease in its tubular secretion|
|Cyclosporin||Cyclosporine toxicity increase|
|Lithium preparations||An increase in plasma lithium content, a decrease in its clearance|
|Digoxin||An increase in plasma digoxin content and an increase in the half-life of the drug|
Based on these data, it is necessary to take into account the medicines that the patient uses in parallel with indomethacin in order to avoid negative reactions.
What symptoms can cause an overdose
External drugs are not so harmless. An overdose of indomethacin ointment is also possible if you use this tool on the vast surfaces of the skin, and more often than three times a day. Exceeding the permissible doses provokes the following clinical symptoms:
- nausea and vomiting;
- intense headaches and severe dizziness;
- memory impairment;
- violation of orientation in space;
- convulsive conditions, numbness of the arms and legs, paresthesia in the most difficult situations.
An overdose is corrected by symptomatic therapy.
The use of indomethacin ointment as a means of treating degenerative-dystrophic and inflammatory pathologies of the musculoskeletal system is agreed with the attending physician. Self-medication is unacceptable, since it provokes the manifestation of adverse reactions that require immediate correction.

Groups of external funds
The main groups of drugs for topical use:
- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which include indomethacin ointment;
- ointments with a warming and irritating effect;
- ointments based on steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Medicines from the first group – non-steroidal anti-inflammatory external drugs – are effective and fast-acting. They are non-prescription drugs: they can be purchased at any pharmacy after receiving the advice of a doctor. The drugs in this group include, in addition to indomethacin, such popular medicines as Diclofenac, Ketonal, Nise-gel, Ortofen and others.
Continuous use of local non-steroidal funds may last no more than two weeks, subject to the recommended dosage and frequency of application.
Chondroprotectors (chondroxide and others) for external use include glucosamine and chondroitin, which are necessary for restoration processes in the joint structures.
Warming, irritating external products are made on the basis of plant extracts (capsaicin), essential oils, snake, bee venoms. They can provoke allergic reactions, so they should be used with caution. Do not apply to damaged, irritated skin. Such drugs include Kapsikam, Apizartron and others.
Sometimes a doctor may prescribe local remedies with the active components of the steroid structure. These drugs have a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect.
Why the choice of external funds should be entrusted to a specialist
With sharp bouts of pain, patients neglect the need to visit a doctor, and immediately choose the external medicine or some alternative method of getting rid of unpleasant sensations on their own. This is not recommended – attempts to self-correct the pathology may aggravate its course.
Medical consultation is necessary because only a doctor can carry out the necessary diagnostic procedures to determine the cause of the symptoms that concern the patient. After that, the doctor will prescribe a comprehensive treatment, including not only external medications, but also drugs for internal use, physiotherapy, massage and exercise therapy.
Therapeutic correction of pathologies of the musculoskeletal system should be comprehensive, and the list of means and methods should be determined by a specialist.
Tips for Patients
Each patient should become that:
- external funds are not able to completely get rid of the disease;
- the prescribed dosage and frequency of use must be observed: local remedies are far from harmless, and an excess of the dose can cause adverse reactions;
- other prescribed methods and means of therapy should not be neglected.
Careful attitude to one’s own health and compliance with all medical recommendations will accelerate recovery and prevent further exacerbation of the pathology.
