Low back pain causes in men treatment

Pain in the lower back in men is a common occurrence with which patients turn to regional hospitals and specialized clinics. As an etiological factor, both infectious and diffuse degenerative diseases can act. Therefore, a trip to the hospital and further treatment should not be postponed.

In order to know the cause exactly, the patient needs to undergo a full diagnosis by a doctor. For pains of a neurological nature, you should consult a neurologist. If the lower back begins to hurt after bumps, bruises or injuries, then in this case they turn to a traumatologist.

Main reasons

Constant discomfort during the tilt and rotation of the body, impaired mobility and pronounced pain syndrome can be signs of serious pathologies of the spine and internal organs. Some of them have serious consequences, so timely diagnosis should not be postponed. The main causes of back pain in men can be classified into the following categories.

Shishkevich Vladimir, orthopedic and traumatologistShishkevich Vladimir, orthopedic and traumatologist, project editor-in-chief ExpertNews.

I have been treating joints for many years. I can say with confidence that the joints are always treatable, even in the very ripe old age.

Hondrostrong is an innovative drug that is created to combat joint diseases. It helps with arthritis, arthrosis and other diseases. Thanks to the use of cream, joint mobility quickly returns. Damaged cartilage tissue is regenerated, which prevents the further development of the problem.

Hondrostrong gel for joints

Our medical center was the first to receive certified access to the latest drug for osteochondrosis and joint pain - Hondrostrong. I confess to you when I heard about it for the first time, I just laughed, because I did not believe in its high efficiency.

But I was amazed when we completed testing: 4567 people were completely cured of diseases of the organs of the musculoskeletal system, and this is more than 94% of all subjects. 5.6% felt significant improvement, and only 0.4% did not notice any improvement.

Hondrostrong cream allows you to forget about back and joint pain in the shortest possible time, literally from 4 days, and even very difficult cases can be cured within a couple of months. In addition, the manufacturer of this product is now offering a 50% discount of the full cost of Hondrostrong cream.

Spinal curvature (scoliosis)

Curvature of the spine in a certain direction is characterized by increased pressure on the vertebrae, their displacement and damage to the intervertebral discs. Pathology most often occurs in young children and adolescents who are slouching or constantly sitting at a computer. Scoliosis is of several stages, which have characteristic signs:

  • drawing pains in the spine;
  • burning and numbness of the lower extremities;
  • gait change;
  • asymmetry of the limbs;
  • limitation in mobility when tilting and turning the body.

With scoliosis, it is necessary to consult a therapist or orthopedist in time to correct spinal deformity and avoid complications. In advanced cases, the child needs a surgical operation to restore the anatomical structure of the spinal column.

Injuries, fractures, and sprain

Sprain is the most common reason a man may have a backache. Mechanical damage, heavy lifting, or traumatic sports can lead to muscle strain. This phenomenon should not be ignored, since there is a high probability of complications.

In the case of fractures or mechanical damage to the vertebrae, ligaments, and other structures of the spine, the patient experiences severe pain that radiates to the limbs, anus, and the inside of the thigh. As soon as a man notices such symptoms after a fall or a strong blow, he should seek medical help. Prior to this, the patient needs to ensure peace and provide first aid.

Osteochondrosis and other degenerative pathologies

All diffuse degenerative diseases have a long development period. The progression of the pathology is observed with a number of factors:

  • the presence of excess weight;
  • injuries and bone fractures;
  • sedentary lifestyle;
  • the presence of addictions;
  • congenital malformations of the spine.

A disease such as osteochondrosis is characterized by pain below the waist, which increases with bends and inclinations. In addition, the patient feels numbness of the limbs, a tingling sensation in the legs and lower back, and a restriction in mobility. Osteoporosis and other degenerative diseases are characteristic of elderly patients. The disease is characterized by a decrease in bone density, which increases their fragility and fragility.

Oncological formations

Benign and malignant tumors in the spine are small, but are accompanied by severe symptoms. Especially severe pain occurs due to the growth of an oncological tumor, its defeat of other organs and compression of important structures of the spinal column (arteries, blood vessels and nerve roots).

Most often, with an oncological lesion in a man, the following symptoms are observed:

  • numbness of the lower extremities;
  • pelvic dysfunction;
  • girdle lower back pain;
  • violation of urination and reproductive function;
  • the occurrence of infectious diseases of the genitourinary system.

Cancer treatment should be done only in specialized centers or hospitals where the patient can be helped.

Infectious diseases

A pronounced pain syndrome to the right and left of the spinal column, fever and general malaise are characteristic signs that the kidneys have become inflamed. Pyelonephritis is an acute inflammatory disease that occurs due to an infection.

With its development, the patient feels constant nausea and aching pain in the abdomen, which intensifies during urination or with sudden movements. If pain is observed mainly in the right side, then this may indicate hepatitis, urolithiasis, appendicitis and inflammation of the pancreas.

Diseases of the genitourinary system

If the lower abdomen hurts, there are uncharacteristic discharge from the urinary canal and the urination process is impaired, then this indicates an infectious and inflammatory pathology of the genitourinary system. This can be prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and oncological formations in this area. Unpleasant sensations on the right side of the spine indicate the presence of prostatitis – inflammation of the prostate gland.

As a rule, this pathology is accompanied by reproductive system dysfunction, impaired urination and pain, radiating to the rectum and lower limbs. On the left side, unpleasant sensations can occur due to oncological formations of the genital organs. After the neoplasms begin to increase in size, they make themselves felt by fever, fever, weight loss and dull pain.

Diagnosing

If a man regularly has lower back pain, he needs to go to a hospital or medical center where he will be tested. Pain of various etiologies can indicate serious pathologies of the internal organs or spine, so the attending doctor conducts a full examination and palpation. As soon as the doctor determines the localization of the pathological process, he will direct the patient to take tests and undergo instrumental diagnostics.

After the results obtained, the therapist can involve a urologist, neuropathologist, surgeon or other specialist in the work, whose competence will be the treatment of such a disease. Only a specialist of a narrow direction after a full diagnosis will be able to say why men’s lower back hurts.

Treatment

Treatment is the final stage in the whole pathogenesis. It provides an individual approach to each patient. Depending on the etiological factor, the treating doctor prescribes medications that stop pain and antibiotics that suppress pathogens in case of infectious diseases.

Medicines

A local therapist after examining the whole body will tell you what to do to the patient in his case. First of all, it is necessary to stop the pain syndrome. For this, NSAIDs, analgesics and local anesthetics are prescribed. These are pain medications that also have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Most often, the doctor prescribes medicines in the form of an ointment, cream or gel (Diclofenac, Ketoprofen, Indomethacin, Nimid and others). Some of them have a warming effect, which is necessary for the treatment of degenerative diseases of the spine.

With severe spasms of smooth muscles, muscle relaxants are additionally prescribed. They reduce muscle tone and eliminate the unpleasant consequences of spasm (aching pain, burning, discomfort). With intervertebral hernias and neurological pathologies, vitamins of group B are additionally prescribed.

In the case of an infectious lesion, a course of antibacterial therapy is provided. The urologist selects an antibiotic that adversely affects pathogens – pathogens. Previously, the patient passes tests to find out about the presence or absence of individual intolerance to certain antibiotics.

Folk remedies

If a person decided to stop acute pain in the lower back on his own, then he can resort to the following methods of alternative therapy:

  • Compress from the floor. The plant is collected in gauze or a small bag in which it boils. After the mixture has cooled slightly, it is applied to the affected area of the back and covered with a warm towel. Keep necessary for 1–2 hours.
  • Rubbing with alcohol tinctures of eucalyptus and burdock. One of the tinctures is selected, after which the lumbar region is rubbed with a thin layer.
  • Warming with the help of mustard plasters. Mustard plasters are purchased in a pharmacy or cosmetic store, which are installed in problem areas. Mustard must be removed immediately after the occurrence of discomfort.
  • Tincture of lilac. 50-100 grams of fresh lilac flowers are poured into 400 ml of vodka, after which the mixture is put in a dark place and insisted for 1-2 weeks. With the finished mixture, rub the affected area.
  • Radish and horseradish compress. Horseradish root is rubbed with a radish, after which the mixture is laid out on the lower back and wrapped with gauze, a warm scarf or scarf.

Prevention

To avoid unpleasant sensations in the lumbar region, it is necessary to regularly visit the regional doctor (therapist) and monitor the health status. Since various diseases can be the cause of back pain, preventative measures may vary.

The main activities include:

  • avoid lifting heavy objects;
  • when lifting a lot of weight, bend your knees a little;
  • evenly distribute the load on both hands;
  • monitor posture and adjust it in case of stoop;
  • engage in an active sport;
  • visit the therapist and undergo regular radiography.

Pain in the lower back in men can be short-term, but this does not mean that the person is completely healthy. If discomfort occurs regularly, then this is the main reason to consult a doctor for medical help.

Why does lower back hurt in men?

Pain in the lumbar spine in men is a common occurrence for many reasons. The specifics of working conditions, maintaining an unhealthy lifestyle provoke pathological processes in various systems and organs of the human body. Malaise in the back, as a rule, is one of the first signs of the development of other diseases. Given the pace of modern life, the load on the spine is incredibly high. Therefore, diseases previously characteristic of older people today affected the younger generation.

Types of pain

To date, it is customary to distinguish five types of pain:

  1. “Sharp”;
  2. “Aching”;
  3. Constant pain or they occur periodically (may depend on the position of the body);
  4. “Shooting”;
  5. “Giving away” pain (that is, pain occurs in one place, but spreads, for example, throughout the body or in the opposite direction from the source).

Strong and sharp

“Acute”, “sharp” back pains often reduce a person’s physical activity. Occur due to injuries of the spinal column. With sprains and spasms of the back muscles, rest during the week helps to eliminate pain.

Pulling and aching

Drawing pains in the lower back in men can be triggered by a disease such as osteomyelitis of the spine. Osteomyelitis is an infectious inflammatory disease characterized by pain in the infected area, fever.

Aching pain in the lower back in men occurs as a result of hypothermia, with the development of osteochondrosis, with curvature of the spine, is a symptom of diseases of the internal organs.

Causes and Diseases causing Back Pain

Scientists identify a number of factors that contribute to the appearance of back pain:

  • Overweight;
  • Permanent stay in a static position (prolonged standing or sitting);
  • Sudden changes in the load on the back (weight lifting);
  • Excessive stress on unstressed muscles.

But there are a number of certain progressive diseases. Consider the specific causes of severe lower back pain in men.

Stress

As the saying goes: “All diseases are from nerves.” Indeed, severe stress and subsequent movement lead to muscle spasm, which is dominated by the load. As a result, pain may not last for weeks, even affecting the motor activity of the victim.
In this case, it makes sense to contact a traumatologist.

Treatment of back pain in men as a result of muscle spasm consists in warming with salt baths and attending massage courses.

Stretching

Stretching the back muscles causes severe discomfort to the patient. The rate of restoration of tissues, ligaments, muscles and tendons depends on the degree and place of damage.

There are three degrees of damage:

  1. Moderate stretching (not intense malaise, disappears in a few days);
  2. An average degree of stretching (sharp, often manifested pains, become more intense with contractile activity of the damaged area);
  3. Complete rupture of the muscle or its components (the muscle loses its ability to contract, severe pain).
  • Sudden pain of varying intensity;
  • It becomes more painful when bending and turning;
  • The occurrence of swelling in the damaged area of the back;
  • Hematomas and bruising (in the presence of internal bleeding of a torn muscle).

The paramount point in therapy is to ensure the total rest of the victim. Something cold should be applied to the damaged area through the tissue surface. If the pain is unbearable, then use painkillers.

With displacement of the intervertebral discs, malaise first occurs in the back, then is felt in the lower extremities. Typically, the fourth and fifth vertebrae lend themselves to injury. Therefore, characteristic pain in the lower back in men is one of the symptoms of displacement of the discs. Crunch may also occur in the hip area.

In advanced stages, the disease can lead to patient immobility and lameness. Painkillers in this case do not have the proper effect on the problem.

osteochondrosis

One of the most common causes of back pain in men is osteochondrosis of the lumbar region. Osteochondrosis is characterized by destructive processes in the cartilage and bone tissues.

The causes of the disease are many:

  1. Insufficient amount of nutrients in tissues (impaired metabolism of tissues and organs);
  2. Hypothermia;
  3. Excessive load on the lower back;
  4. Sedentary lifestyle (lack of exercise);
  5. Obesity;
  6. Gastrointestinal tract diseases;
  7. Hereditary factor;
  8. Period of pregnancy;
  9. Impaired posture;
  10. Infectious diseases;
  11. Back injuries.

  • Back pains are of a different nature;
  • At the first stage of the disease, motion disappears;
  • Numbness of the lower extremities may occur;
  • Tonic cramps of the calf muscles;
  • In the future, the person is lame, the musculoskeletal system suffers.

If osteochondrosis has become the cause of back pain and men, then treatment should be carried out immediately.

Osteochondrosis develops quickly enough and in the absence of therapy can lead to disability of the patient.

Radiculitis

The disease sciatica affects different parts of the musculoskeletal system. Pain in the lower back in men with radiculitis occurs suddenly. In general, inflammation of the nerve roots of the spinal column occurs in old age.
Signs of radiculitis:

  1. Painful sensations can occur without preliminary symptoms;
  2. There is an unpleasant sensation when lifting a straight leg in a prone position, with the head tilted down;
  3. Sweating intensifies;
  4. The skin becomes paler;
  5. In a state of immobility, soreness passes.

Spinal hernia

Pain in the lower back in men can be a sign of the formation of an intervertebral hernia. A hernia is often formed as a complication of osteochondrosis of the spine and has similar symptoms:

  • Pain in the lower limbs
  • Feeling of numbness of the legs;
  • Soreness occurs with sudden movements, with an uncomfortable position of the back and with the usual physical load on the back.

At the site of vertebral hernia formation, tissue elasticity decreases, discs squeeze nerve roots, tissue swelling, muscle weakness may appear. With a hernia in the lumbar region, soreness and heaviness are felt in the legs and in the inguinal zone.

In the form of complications of hernial formations in the lower back, impotence, disorders of the genitourinary system, and paralysis of the legs occur.

Kidney and bladder diseases

Pain in the lower back in men also becomes a sign of a urinary system problem. It is not always possible to independently differentiate diseases of the kidneys and spine, therefore, independent treatment is very dangerous for the patient’s health.

Differences in kidney disease are as follows:

  • Discomfort occurs a few weeks after hypothermia or the transfer of infectious lesions;
  • Sharp pain during urination;
  • The color of urine is different from the norm;
  • Increased blood pressure, persistent headache;
  • High body temperature;
  • Swelling of the legs, face in the morning;
  • Lack of appetite, nausea and vomiting;
  • General weakness.

The above symptoms may be persistent or last a long time, alternating with periods of optimal condition; “Pulling” pain appears in men on one side of the lower back just above or below the location of the kidneys, it can “give” to the pelvic region.

In any case, you can not warm the kidneys, so with prolonged pain it is recommended to consult a therapist.

Diseases of the intestine

Persistent lower back pain in men and a feeling of heaviness can be the result of intestinal infections or parasites, metabolic disorders or the formation of tumors.

Often, the inflammatory processes of the digestive system cause permanent discomfort in the abdomen and lumbar region. The person has a fever, dizziness, bloating, weakness of the body, and nausea may occur. Drawing pains in the abdomen often occur in women due to structural features of the body. In men, this can be not only intestinal diseases, but also appendicitis, pathological processes of closely located organs.

Why a back hurts in the lumbar in men, the doctor will answer after an anamnesis and a thorough diagnosis. Back pain can report various diseases and complications in the human body.

Causes of lower back pain in men

Pain in the lower back in men has many causes that carry various dangers for the human body. Often pain is only the first stage of the disease, which in the future leads to serious consequences – disability or even death. When asked why a lower back pain in men can be answered only by a certified specialist in the field of back diseases – a surgeon or an orthopedist.

Stretching

If there is a traumatic effect on the back of a man, muscles can stretch. This often happens when a man lifts weights or exerts himself physically unnecessarily, no matter in everyday life or during sports. Many weight-bearing athletic exercises that load the back vertically, such as deadlifts, can cause such an injury. If there is a suspicion, the cause of the pain may be sprained, help should be provided sooner. The most important thing is to eliminate tension on the back. Otherwise, the situation may worsen.

To cope with the inflammatory process, it is permissible to use a cold compress. Any product from the freezer will do. But low temperature can injure the skin, so it is better to put a tissue layer under the compress. You need to hold it for about 30 minutes.

Then the treatment should go into the hands of emergency specialists. They will evaluate the condition, prescribe diagnostic tests to rule out more serious injuries. A few weeks will heal the injury. The main principle is peace, otherwise chronic pain in the lumbar region can become a consequence.

Pinched nerve

Causes of back pain in men can be in pinched nerves. This can happen as a result of sudden movements and exercises with weights, lifting weights in everyday life. It is necessary to perform all sports movements with the right technique, which usually involves a straight back. Severe pain can be given to the lower limbs. First of all, you need to provide the patient peace and warmth, to take the most comfortable position in which the muscles of the lower back can completely relax.

Place a folded blanket under the knee joints to relax the lumbar muscles. Wrap the loin in a thick cloth. You can wear a warming wool belt.

  • We advise you to read: why the back hurts in the area of the kidneys

If the nerve is pinched as a result of exposure to low temperature or draft, repeat all the same operations. In addition, treatment here should include warming gels. If after about two days the patient does not feel better, visit a neurologist.

Stress states

The life of a strong half of humanity is filled with the pursuit of success, victories and failures. Therefore, pain in the lower back in a man can have a root of excessive psychological fatigue, tension of nerves.

Psychological studies show that a man who has a difficult life period is prone to stoop. Often for this reason, the load on the lower back is increasing.

In this situation, the patient needs rest, a change of scenery and type of activity. In any case, the diagnosis can only be made by a neurologist who can see what other problems the male body is experiencing.

Инфекции

If the pain in the lower back is accompanied by an increase in temperature, it is possible that the kidneys become inflamed – pyelonephritis has developed. In addition to fever, symptoms such as nausea and vomiting are observed. The pain is localized in the lower back on the left or in the right side of the abdomen. The loin begins to whine, and this aching pain intensifies during careless movements. With such a clinical picture, you need to contact a urological office as soon as possible. If pyelonephritis is started, it can enter the chronic stage. Purulent formations, abscesses will appear.

In many cases, pain in the lower back can be symptoms of a malfunction in the internal organs of a man. Pain syndrome radiates to the lower back from the digestive and genitourinary organs. That is why, even if it seems that the source of pain is the back, you should consult a doctor and undergo an examination.

If it hurts the lower back on the right, it can talk about hepatitis, pneumonia, diseases and inflammation of the gallbladder. Also, pain in this area often speak of diseases and inflammatory processes of the prostate. Intense pain indicates the possibility of appendicitis, pancreatitis, kidney stones. But pain in the lower back is just one of the symptoms. Determine that the internal organs are at risk, can also be established by such manifestations as nausea, fever, painful urination.

Osteoporosis

When an older man bends down and experiences back pain, osteoporosis becomes one of the probable diagnoses. This pathology develops due to a lack of calcium in the tissues. At first, aching pain syndrome manifests itself.

The pain can be constant or find attacks after sudden movements, sneezing, coughing, laughing. Other possible symptoms are convulsive muscle contractions, postural deformity, and gait. To start a comprehensive treatment, you need, among other things, to visit an endocrinologist. Calcium metabolism is often disturbed due to age-related changes in hormonal levels.

Osteoporosis of the lumbar is dangerous because it violates the internal integrity of the vertebrae, and the lower back – the mobile region of the back. Therefore, patients with osteoporosis experience discomfort when tilting the body to the left and right. Movement problems may also occur – the spine loses its cushioning capacity and fractures can occur under heavy loads.

osteochondrosis

Pain below the lower back can be caused by osteochondrosis of the lumbar spine. Osteochondrosis is the process of proliferation of bone and cartilage of the vertebra, which pinch the nerve endings and cause pain. Osteochondrosis of the back in men is a frequent occurrence due to increased stress.

Symptoms include pain and a feeling of “stiffness” in the lower back. This is due to the growth of cartilage and their contact with each other below the vertebra, which does not allow a person to fully straighten his back. The back can become ill with a sudden movement or if a person makes a low bend.

What to do with osteochondrosis can be answered by an orthopedic doctor or surgeon. Treatment is aimed at inhibiting the formation of cartilage by introducing inhibitors of cell division, stretching the vertebrae and using corsets. In some cases, surgery may be used to relieve the strangulated nerve.

Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy is called pinching of the nerve root by cartilage or bone tissue. Often the cause of radiculopathy is osteochondrosis, which leads to the development of pain and subsequent degenerative changes in the nervous tissue of the spinal cord and brain.

Radiculopathy is characterized by soreness in the lower back, which gives to the left or right side. The back can be painfully pulled, the sensitivity of the skin of the back may be lost. Long-term radiculopathy can lead to a problem in the functioning of internal organs, for example, to bowel obstruction or a malfunction of the bladder.

  • We advise you to read: why the right side hurts

Lower back pain is often associated with radiculopathy, however, an examination and diagnosis can only be done using MRI or lumbar radiography. Treatment should only begin after an accurate diagnosis has been made, since glucocorticoids used to stop the pain syndrome can significantly reduce the person’s immune response.

Protrusion and hernia

The intervertebral discs act as a shock absorber between the vertebrae, mitigating vibration when walking. The intervertebral disc consists of the pulpous nucleus and fibrous membrane. Pain in the lower back in men often goes unnoticed, which in no case should be done, since this can lead to the development of the disease. If the disc ruptures, an intervertebral hernia may form, which leads to disability due to the loss of walking ability.

Symptoms may vary depending on the site of protrusion. For example, pain in the lower back on the left may indicate lateral protrusion of the lumbar intervertebral disc. In the causes of back pain in men with damage to the fibrous membrane, damage to the roots that constricts the pulpous nucleus can also be entered. Intervertebral hernia is an extreme degree of protrusion or rupture of the fibrous ring. In this case, severe back pain in the right or left in men can be felt, which signals damage to different parts of the spinal cord.

Why does lower back hurt in men?

Men get sick less often than women. It is known that the pain threshold for the representatives of the stronger sex is low, so men come to the hospital on time. Some do not look for the cause of the sudden back pain, think that everything will pass by itself, and make a mistake. Even a faint tingling is the first call to serious problems.

Bechterew’s disease

Ankylosing spondylitis, also known as ankylosing spondylitis, is a painful rheumatic syndrome that affects mainly the lower part of the spine. The pain from it is very similar to a herniated disc. On average, the disease is diagnosed 8 years after the first signs. Almost 30% of patients with ankylosing spondylitis are mistakenly diagnosed with a herniated disc.

Ankylosing spondylitis arthritis develops regardless of gender and age. However, observations say that men are sick 3 times more often than women. Symptoms of the disease are observed already at the age of 24-26 years.

The treatment of the syndrome is complex: physiotherapy and drug therapy at the same time. The main goal is to reduce pain and maintain joint mobility. Classical painkillers inhibit inflammation. The medicine promotes a relaxed awakening in the morning.

The lack of proper treatment leads to a hump on the back. For preventive purposes, it is recommended to do exercises to increase lung capacity. A good purchase for the patient will be a new hard mattress and pillow. It is useful to regularly wear a corset, go to the bathhouse, hamam, do massage, eat regularly and quit smoking.

Muscles are tense for no reason

In men, the most common cause of pain is muscle tension, sudden and swooning muscle movements. More often this is due to excessive enthusiasm for sports or weight transfer. It involves both physical and psychological discomfort.

Treatment: rest, ice, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers. Recovery of muscle tension occurs slowly, on average a month and a half. In case of rupture of tendons and ligaments, operations in the inguinal region cannot be avoided.

Swelling of the lymph nodes

Swollen lymph glands are caused by a viral or bacterial infection in the lymph nodes. Nodules are a very important part of the immune system that fights infections. This disease can also be manifested by lower back pain.

Treatment: if a bacterial infection is the cause of enlarged lymph nodes, then the solution is antibiotic treatment. If you have lupus or inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis, additional treatment is prescribed to improve the treatment of lymph nodes. Some types of cancer can also cause swelling of the lymph nodes. In these cases, surgery and chemotherapy should be involved.

Inguinal hernia

Inguinal hernia is accompanied by a bulge in the groin, muscle tension, a feeling of heaviness, pain, which gives back to the lower back and genitals.

Treatment: The only treatment is an inguinal hernia repair. There are 2 ways to do this: removal through open surgery or laparoscopy. During general surgery, the doctor makes an incision in the groin and removes a hernia inside the intestinal membrane. After such an operation, a man needs 30-45 days of rest to recover. During laparoscopy, the surgeon makes many small incisions in the abdominal region. A small tube with a camera (laparoscope) is inserted into the incisions, removes the hernia and makes thin sutures with synthetic threads. Laparoscopy is a less painful procedure. The recovery period is limited to a few days.

Epididymitis

Epididymitis is also manifested by lower back pain. It occurs due to a bladder infection, sometimes transmitted sexually. This is inflammation and swelling of the nodules in the groin.

Treatment: treat the disease with antibiotics. If the cause is chlamydial infection, treatment is prescribed for both partners. To relieve pain, painkillers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory tablets are used.

Kidney stones

Kidney stones are small crystalline formations. They appear due to malnutrition, lack of fluid in the body, poor ecology, radiation. They cause severe lower back pain during urination.

Treatment: an effective way to remove stones from the kidneys is regular heavy drinking, painkillers, antiemetics, drugs that expand the renal passages. For a softer conclusion, traditional healers advise drinking on an empty stomach several sips of olive oil. Kidney stones do not disappear spontaneously, are excreted painfully. Large crystals are removed using cystoscopy or other surgical procedures.

Testicular tumor

Testicular tumor is one of the rare subspecies of testicular cancer. Its first sign is severe pain in the groin and lower back during urination.

The treatment for the disease depends on the size of the tumor and the patient’s health status. Surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy are possible. Most patients get a successful result from treatment.

Orhit

Orchitis is swelling of the testicles. The disease often occurs as a complication after suffering pigs in boys or sexually transmitted diseases.

Treatment. Antibiotics are used if the cause of the disease is bacterial infections. Testicular prolapse in the inguinal region can occur from hard work. The sensations are very painful. In case of testicular prolapse, the only option for recovery is immediate surgery. Usually the problem is solved in 6 hours.

Thus, back pain may very well have nothing to do with the back. This is a non-specific symptom that can be caused by many causes. Therefore, with the appearance of such pains, do not postpone the visit to the doctor.

Causes of Back Pain

In Russian neurology, back pain is often attributed to protrusion or hernia. But the whole world thinks differently, and I try to convey to you modern world views in a simple language.

Physiology

In our body, changes are taking place over the years. The baby’s skin is soft, supple. At 30, no matter how we resorted to cosmetic procedures, she is no longer like that. Imagine a sailor who spent his whole life swimming: his skin is rough and wrinkled.

The same thing happens with our spine. In most cases, protrusion and hernia are natural age-related changes. If in your life there are a lot of provoking factors, for example, carrying heavy loads, then the probability of getting a large hernia increases.

Numerous studies have found that protrusion of the disc occurs in healthy people: at 20 years old – up to 40% of patients (I recall, these are patients without back pain), at 70 years old – up to 90%. In addition, the severity of changes in MRI is not related to the degree of pain: with a large hernia, there may not be pain at all, and with small protrusions the patient may have severe pain (because the reason is not protrusion, but in another).

Does a hernia never cause pain?

Of course it does! About 1-4% of all cases of back pain.

How to recognize it?

A hernia leads not only to pain, but also to other disorders: a violation of sensitivity, a change in reflexes, and sometimes a decrease in muscle strength. A competent doctor determines all this during a neurological examination. If the muscle strength is sufficient, the reflexes when tapping with a hammer are symmetrical, not weakened, there are no sensory disturbances, then it is extremely unlikely that the back pain is caused by a hernia.

In addition, squeezing the spinal root at a certain level (if you read the MRI results, you will see that protrusions and hernias are described at a level, for example C3-C5 or L5-S1), the hernia does not just decrease sensitivity anywhere, but in certain segments, and strictly defined changes in reflexes. A neurologist correlates the level of damage with MRI data.

But why does the back hurt if the hernia / protrusion is not to blame?

All causes of back pain can be divided into 3 groups: non-specific, specific and radicular.

Nonspecific

Nonspecific – up to 85%, due to muscles, ligaments, tendons, small joints.

How to recognize?

During a neurological examination, there are no alarming symptoms and signs of damage to the nerve roots, the pain intensifies with movement, decreases at rest, most often associated with an incorrect motor stereotype.

Acute pain occurs after an unsuccessful turn, tilt, forced posture, for example, sleeping in an uncomfortable position – and the next morning it is impossible to turn the neck. Chronic pain is often due to the fact that a person puts too much strain on some muscle groups and does not burden others at all.

Long work in a sitting position, carrying a child on one side are incorrect motor stereotypes. You can drink pills endlessly, but until you change your physical activity, it is likely that the pain will return. Of course, activity should be wise.

Additional diagnostics

neither x-rays nor MRI are needed, only a doctor’s examination. Why? They either will not find anything, or they will find protrusions / hernias that are not relevant.

Specific

Specific – up to 10%: spinal fracture, tuberculosis, osteomyelitis, abscess, spinal stenosis, neoplasm, ankylosing spondylitis and others.

How to recognize?

In addition to back pain, there may be other symptoms (fever, weight loss) and the pain itself has unusual characteristics, for example, does not depend on movement or intensifies at rest, at night.

Additional diagnostics

A blood test, x-ray, MRI, PET-CT – it all depends on the alleged cause.

Radicular

Radicular – up to 4% (according to some sources up to 10%), caused by compression of the nerve root due to a hernia.

How to recognize?

Already wrote above.

Additional diagnostics

Spinal MRI may be necessary, but the doctor determines the need in each case.

The doctor’s task is to determine which of the 3 groups of causes the pain belongs to, further tactics will depend on this.

When should back pain alert me?

There is a system of “red flags” – symptoms that should cause diagnostic alertness in a doctor:

Complaints

  • the occurrence of pain with new, unusual characteristics at the age of less than 20 or more than 55 years;
  • pain independent of movement, pain at rest;
  • increased pain at night;
  • the nature of pain increasing over time;
  • lack of pain relief or its intensification after being in a supine position;
  • localization of pain in the thoracic spine or in the chest;
  • prolonged malaise, fever, unexplained weight loss.

Anamnesis (history of life and disease)

  • recent back injury;
  • the presence in the history of cancer (malignant) diseases;
  • persistent infection;
  • osteoporosis;
  • prolonged use of corticosteroids (including in the form of inhalation);
  • the use of anticoagulants;
  • intravenous drug use;
  • immunodeficiency (including HIV infection), taking immunosuppressive drugs.

Inspection

  • the presence of focal neurological symptoms in the patient (limb weakness, numbness, impaired urination and defecation);
  • pain on palpation and percussion of the spine, increased pain when straining;
  • severe spinal deformity;
  • pulsating abdominal mass.

Laboratory diagnosis

  • increased ESR, CRP, unexplained anemia, coagulopathy, thrombocytopenia.

Treatment

  • the absence of a positive effect from conservative treatment of the patient for 4-6 (.) weeks.

The presence of these symptoms (especially the totality) in a patient with back pain should make the doctor think better about the cause of the pain and rule out serious pathology.

Is it necessary to do an MRI for back pain?

With MRI for back pain, there are 2 extremes: do it all in a row “just in case” and do not do research when it is really needed. We deal with you.

If pain in the lower back occurred in a patient younger than 50 years old, it does not radiate to the legs, is not accompanied by fever and neurological symptoms (muscle weakness, impaired reflexes and sensitivity, impaired urination and defecation), there were no tumors in the past, then with a probability of 99 % pain is non-specific and is associated with the involvement of muscles, ligaments, tendons, small joints.

To bring this probability closer to 100%, we evaluate the patient in dynamics and see if the pain decreases after treatment or not. If an MRI of the spine is made for such a patient, we will not receive any important information.

Even if hernias or protrusions are found, this will not affect anything.

Firstly, in a patient without neurological symptoms, hernias and protrusions are an accidental finding and are not associated with back pain. This idea is so difficult to take root in the minds of patients and colleagues, but nevertheless it is.

Secondly, findings on MRI in the form of dumb, silent hernias and protrusions will not affect therapeutic tactics in any way.

But how not to miss another serious pathology? There are red flags for this that we have already discussed. The doctor analyzes all these alarming symptoms (in aggregate, and not separately), after which he makes a decision on the need for MRI.

Why lower back hurts in men

Constant lower back pain in men over 35 years of age is a common phenomenon. Unfortunately, many people, faced with this ailment, start taking painkillers on their own or gradually get used to chronic discomfort. However, pain in the lumbar spine in men lends itself to successful treatment, and you do not need to endure it, especially since sometimes the lack of treatment is life-threatening.

Why does lower back hurt in men? Possible reasons

Most often, unpleasant sensations in the back in middle-aged patients are due to pathologies of the spine, which develop due to age-related changes, increased stress, or, conversely, inactivity. The influence of these factors leads to wear of the intervertebral discs or displacement of the vertebrae. Because of this, men have aching lower back pain. Often it intensifies after physical exertion, a long stay in one position, hypothermia. A decrease in mobility also indicates the development of spinal diseases: it becomes harder to turn, bend, walk or stand in one place.

Also signs of diseases of the musculoskeletal system are:

  • soreness in the back or lower limbs when trying to bend;
  • frequent numbness of the legs or buttocks;
  • muscle cramps in the legs, back, buttocks;
  • crackling, crunching when trying to “stretch” your back, tilt, when walking.

In degenerative-dystrophic diseases (osteochondrosis, arthrosis), intervertebral discs and muscle tissue suffer, vessels and nerve roots are compressed. Curvature of the spine, which can occur in adults with sedentary work or hard physical work, leads to compression or an incorrect position of the internal organs and can also lead to soreness in the lower back. If you suspect any of the spinal pathologies, consult an orthopedist or a neurologist.

The lower back in men can also hurt with ailments that are not related to the spinal column. In such cases, the help of the following specialists is required:

  • with diseases of the digestive tract – a gastroenterologist;
  • with kidney diseases – a nephrologist or urologist;
  • in case of violations in the genital area – by a urologist or venereologist (in the case of sexually transmitted infections).

Frequent constipation or diarrhea, stool with blood, vomiting or nausea indicate that pain in the lumbar region is caused by pathologies of the digestive tract.

If urination is impaired, fever and general deterioration in the lower back are most likely caused by pathologies of the excretory system, including kidney diseases, which, without treatment, can be life threatening.

With a decrease in libido, the appearance of rashes in the inguinal and gluteal areas, specific discharge, difficulty or increased urination, pain in the lower back can be a consequence of sexual diseases.

A man’s lower back hurts: what can be done at home?

To reduce pain, it is necessary to remove pressure clothing, refuse to take heavy foods (fatty foods, smoked meats, etc.), lie in the most comfortable position. In the absence of temperature, nausea, stool and urination disorders, specific secretions, you can:

  • take a warm bath;
  • drink painkiller;
  • warm the lower back with a wool scarf or heating pad.

However, even if the condition improves and there are no clear signs of diseases of the internal organs, a doctor’s consultation is necessary. Pain associated with the spine tends to appear and disappear in the early stages of the disease. But gradually pain attacks begin to recur more and more often, motor activity and sensitivity decrease, in the most severe cases – up to paralysis. In addition, without treatment of the pathology of the spine, they lead to various complications, causing cystitis, hemorrhoids, decreased libido, and impotence.

Diagnostic features

Only a doctor can find out the causes of pulling back pain in men. In the absence of signs of gastrointestinal upset, reproductive system or excretory system, you need to seek help from a neurologist or orthopedist. If the lower back hurts after a bruise, it is advisable to consult a traumatologist.

During the appointment, the specialist will perform an examination and palpation, check reflexes, examine complaints and medical history. For an additional examination, you may need:

High-quality images can reveal not only changes in the anatomy of the spine, but also complications: compression of nerves, narrowing or expansion of blood vessels, inflammatory processes. Laboratory tests and ultrasound are necessary to detect complications associated with internal organs. After determining the reason why the man has lower back pain, the doctor will develop a treatment plan.

Treatment of back pain in men

The answer to the question of how to treat back pain in men depends on the specific diagnosis, however, in general terms, the treatment regimens for many diseases of the spine coincide. Of the number of medicines, as a rule, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamins, chondroprotectors and some other drugs are prescribed. In case of an infectious lesion, antibiotics are prescribed.

In the early stages of noncommunicable diseases, medication can often be dispensed with. You can overcome pain and inflammation with the help of physiotherapy. Physiotherapeutic procedures do not cause side effects and allow you to:

  1. “Start” recovery processes;
  2. relieve pain, inflammation and swelling;
  3. improve blood circulation and tissue nutrition;
  4. eliminate muscle tension and cramps;
  5. get r >To accelerate tissue regeneration, it is necessary to normalize nutrition: reduce the consumption of pickles and smoked meats, add foods rich in gelatin to the diet. In more detail, a medical diet for each patient is developed by a doctor.

Exercise therapy will help improve motor functions, strengthen the muscle corset, normalize blood flow and prevent degenerative processes. It is desirable that gymnastics at least for the first time be held under the supervision of a specialist in physiotherapy. He will choose the appropriate load for the patient, develop a training plan and will monitor the correctness of the exercises.

To improve overall well-being and increase the effectiveness of the main treatment, auxiliary therapy methods are used: massage, acupuncture or biopuncture, manual therapy. All these procedures improve the quality of sleep and the overall emotional mood, contribute to the removal of muscle tension.

In the late stages of spinal pathologies, conservative measures are often not enough, surgical assistance is required. After such operations, a sufficiently long rehabilitation is necessary, and a full restoration of health, unfortunately, will be no longer possible. Therefore, with painful sensations in the lower back, it is very important to seek medical help on time, not limited to taking painkillers and other self-medication attempts, which in the best case will help extremely little, and in the worst, will accelerate the development of the disease.

The “Hello!” Clinics have the latest laboratory and diagnostic equipment, which makes it possible to detect pathologies of OA in the early stages. Extensive practical experience allows doctors to develop for each patient the most effective comprehensive treatment plan.
